Scientific Contributions
- Collaborative Networks and Technological Innovation
He has developed collaborative network models applied to manufacturing and co-innovation, with support from IBM, the Inter-American Development Bank, and the European Union (FP7). These models have led to the creation of a science-technology company, IECOS, and the publication of three highly relevant and highly cited articles:
a. "Collaborative networked organizations – Concepts and practice in manufacturing enterprises"
Google scholar: 725 citations - WoS: 312 citations - SCOPUS: 416 citations
b. "Collaborative networked organizations and customer communities: value co-creation and co-innovation in the networking era"
Google scholar: 675 citations - WoS: 252 citations - SCOPUS: 340 citations
c. "A tenant-based resource allocation model for scaling Software-as-a-Service applications over cloud computing infrastructures, Future Generation Computer Systems"
Google scholar: 352 citations - WoS: 98 citations - SCOPUS: 127 citations
2. Smart and Sustainable Systems (3S and 5S)
He proposed the concept of 3S Systems (Sensing, Smart, and Sustainable), later expanded to 5S (adding Social and Safe), applied to energy sustainability projects such as the "Binational Laboratory" funded by CONACYT-SENER. This approach has produced high-impact academic articles, two books published by Springer, and new applications in agriculture (Parcelas 5.0) and sustainable manufacturing.
3. Educational Innovation and Patents
He has led the development of educational models based on open innovation laboratories and active learning, as well as a reconfigurable educational micromachine. These initiatives have been adopted by institutions such as CONALEP, UNAM, and Tecnológico de Monterrey, and were recognized with QS Imagine awards in 2018 and 2021. He is also the co-inventor of two patents in micromachine technology and numerical control.
4. Academic Production and Talent Development
He has extensive experience training graduate students (master's and doctoral degrees) and has contributed to numerous scientific publications on advanced engineering and Education 4.0.
Consulting
Dr. Molina has worked as a consultant for the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank. He was a member of the United Nations Information and Communication Technologies Task Force, and part of the IFAC International Federation of Automatic Control e IFIP International Federation of Information Processing. Molina has also served on the editorial boards of the Annals of Review of Control, International Journal of Sustainable Engineering, Food and Energy Security, and International Journal of Computer Integrated Manufacturing. In 2012, he was a speaker at the Mexican Senate where he presented issues related to the Energy Reform. From 2014-2018 he was part of the Nuevo León Energy Development Council and served on the Board of Directors of the National Institute of Clean Electricity and Energy (2016–2019).
Entrepreneurship
He has founded three technology-based companies: IECOS- Integration Engineering and Construction Systems (www.iecos.com) in which he holds the position of CTO (Chief Technology Officer), SMES- Solutions for Manufacturing Enterprise Systems and ALBIOMAR (www.albiomar.com).
